John Donahoe, CEO of eBay, hinted in an interview today on CNBC that Ebay may very soon start accepting Bitcoin and integrating the digital currency into its payment processing platform PayPal.
In the interview, he also said he owns Bitcoin personally and is working to better understand the currency that’s taking the world by storm.
Digital currency is going to play an important role going forward. And at PayPal, we’re going to have to integrate digital currencies into our wallet.
Although eBay has not fully embraced digital currencies, the company has started allowing the technology to be used on its website in certain cases.
For example, Ebay’s classifieds listings sections in the US and UK now display virtual currency categories where consumers can facilitate peer-to-peer digital currency buying and selling. It has also made available new Miners and Mining Contract categories for standard auction style listings.
Listing Experiment
This writer just recently started selling Goldcoin (GLD) on the site using an Ebay classified listing. It’s not clear yet if charge backs will still be a problem and/or if PayPal will accept blockchain transaction data as proof of delivery. I will report back my findings in a future article.
